Though the series has won by India still we can see a good batting knock from both the teams. Dhilsan played some wonderful knock during this series and Tharanga show his batting potential in the absence of Jayasurya. Shewag the un-predictable and nightmare batsmen for the bowlers who captained two ODI's in this series and had a successful victory. Dhoni will be back in the 5th Odi on Sunday after the two match Ban.

Upul Tharanga: With big-hitters all around him, and a bold decision that put him in Sanath Jayasuriya's spot at the top of the order, Tharanga would have been under pressure coming into the series. If he was, he is yet to show it. With 295 runs at 73.75, he is behind only Tillakaratne Dilshan in terms of run-scoring. A definite contender for the Man-of-the-Series award if he can put in another strong show.
Sachin Tendulkar: What Tharanga has been to Dilshan, Tendulkar has been to Virender Sehwag. For a second fiddle, 216 runs at 72 is not a bad job. Having rested for the tri-series in Bangladesh, Tendulkar will want to make the most of his last ODI innings in a while.

What can be expected for sure is some high quality pace bowling. After a decade of batting riches, cricket suddenly finds itself with good fast bowlers floating around and few are more exciting than the ones Australia and Pakistan have; between them, Doug Bollinger, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Johnson, Mohammad Aamer, Mohammmad Asif and Umar Gul are likely to determine the fate of the series

This will be the first time since MS Dhoni's debut in 2004 that India play an ODI without him and Yuvraj Singh. Dhoni has often said that missing Yuvraj is a big blow, so how India cope with the loss of their captain and best batsman in ODIs in addition to Yuvraj will be crucial.
The tour has seen so many players succumbing to injuries it's a surprise the rest have managed to get so far. Sri Lanka have lost the services of Thilan Thushara, Muttiah Muralitharan, Dilhara Fernando and Angelo Mathews.

One thing I can't understand is that Dhoni was very well aware of the bowling potential of the Indian team and I was surprised when he took batting after won the toss. Indian bowlers found difficulties to restrict the Sri lankan team with the huge target of 400+. The Indian captain (Dhoni) has been banned for two ODI's with immediate effect due to the offensive slow over rate and Shewag will captain the team India for both the ODI's.

The second ODI of Sri Lanka's India tour, on December 18, has been shifted to Nagpur from the original venue, Visakhapatnam, following concerns over security arrangements. "We want to win the series that's what we are supposed to do, [but] at the same time not being overconfident is also important," he said. "We have to be in that phase of mind where you are very confident but at the same time not to cross that line. We are taking care of the things we need to do, including fielding and death bowling. We have quite a few areas we need to improve and are focusing on that. At the same time whatever our strong point is we need to be up there throughout."

"The catching is a bit of concern," Dhoni said. "We are not a brilliant fielding side, but we don't drop too many catches. That also hurt us also to some extent."
Had India taken their chances, Sri Lanka would have struggled to reach 215. In the over after he was dropped, Jayasuriya hit Ashish Nehra for five consecutive boundaries and provided the acceleration after a slow start. The opening stand of 43 set the platform for Kumar Sangakkara to score 78 off just 37 deliveries. Kapugedera provided propulsion by scoring 47 off 20 while Mathews made 15 off four balls.

TV rights in India are bought for exorbitant prices, and there is no way it should be the broadcasters' responsibility to install new technology for a new system that the ICC is implementing. The two significant problems India had in England, however, will be missing from these two games. Virender Sehwag, who had an injured shoulder during the World Twenty20, is back and in frightening form, and the other batsmen's weaknesses against the rising delivery are unlikely to be exposed on the flat and true pitches in India.
Gary Kirsten, the India coach, had said after they were eliminated from the World Twenty20 that there were holes in the Twenty20 set-up and teams had worked out strategies to effectively negate India's strengths. The next World Twenty20 is in May 2010 and the opportunities to formulate, fine-tune and effect plans are limited

Six wins from seven starts ... a statistic that looked like an anomaly is starting to take on a life of its own, as England continue their improbable dominance of South Africa in 50-over cricket. At Centurion on Sunday, Paul Collingwood marked his national-record 171st appearance with a sublime allround performance, as England exacted satisfying vengeance for their humiliation in the previous week's second Twenty20.
Their seven-wicket victory showcased the unfamiliar vein of confidence that is running through the squad at present, and while Andrew Strauss has made caution a watchword throughout his impressive tenure as England captain, it's fair to suggest that they have got their opponents a little bit rattled at present.
Mickey Arthur, South Africa's coach, has not been short of a word or two in this series, but his attempts at psychological warfare have so far fallen on impassive ears. Jonathan Trott, the principal object of his ire, ignored the boo-boys and fronted up with a critical 87 to anchor England's run-chase at Centurion, and though Arthur's other target, Adil Rashid, has been rather subdued in his two appearances to date, he can hardly be regarded as a pivotal figure in England's plans just yet.
Watch Pakistan vs New Zealand 2nd Test Live Streaming Online. Simon Taufel gave Brendon McCullum lbw off the penultimate ball in Dunedin, Pakistan appeared to have separated New Zealand's last reliable batsmen and won the day. McCullum, however, asked for a review and Taufel changed his decision after replays showed the ball hitting pad just outside off stump. It was a vital moment; one that Ross Taylor believed left the Test "evenly placed" at stumps on the first day.
"The last decision going our way helped us immensely," Taylor said. "The partnership between Daniel [Vettori] and Brendon [McCullum] has probably put us back in the match. Being 200 for 6 at the end of the day's play would have favoured Pakistan, but 270 for 6, I think it's pretty even."
Taylor's fighting 94 propped up New Zealand after the loss of two early wickets before a mini-collapse, during which they lost three wickets for 19 runs. McCullum and Vettori then added 65 for the seventh wicket to help the hosts recover before the scare in the final over.
Earlier in the day Pakistan had also referred a close lbw shout against Taylor, which was ruled in the batsman's favour when he was on 54. After two reviews went New Zealand's way on the first day of the new system's implementation, Taylor was happy with it.
"I have seen it [the first referral] since I have been out, it was a little bit closer than I thought," he said. "When I first got hit I thought it was high and might have even hit outside the line. As it worked out, the umpire made the right decision and I suppose I am happy for that. With the referrals system, last year, we had a few that did not go in our favour and today we had a couple go our way, so it is good at the moment."

Sri Lanka started brilliantly in the first Test but were thwarted first by Rahul Dravid and then the pitch in Ahmedabad. Momentum is an over-rated word, though, and both teams will start afresh in Kanpur.
These two teams played each other only once in Kanpur, in 1986, and it was a high-scoring draw. They couldn't finish even the first innings; Sri Lanka were all out for 420 and India were 676 for 7 when the curtains fell on the Test.
"It should be a good wicket to bat on and for a two-two [two fast bowlers, two spinners] combination." Daljit Singh, the head of the BCCI curators' committee, promises a sporting pitch.
"I am not worried about my position in the team. I don't believe that I am doing anything wrong with my bowling and the team backs me to bounce back soon." Amit Mishra, who picked up just one wicket in the first Test, is confident of doing better in Kanpur.
Watch India vs Srilanka 1st test live streaming online video for free. Sangakkara has confirmed that one of Prasanna Jayawardene and Kaushal Silva will keep wicket, meaning that Dilshan will play as a specialist batsman. Dilshan has been under the watchful eyes of the team physio after spraining his ankle but a final decision on his availability will be made on the morning of the Test. The toughest decision, though, will be on picking the second spinner behind Murali. Sangakkara said before the game that the decision would be made on "performers" and by that logic the choice should be the left-armer Rangana Herath.
Herath has done very well in four recent home Tests against Pakistan and New Zealand, taking 23 wickets, and was picked ahead of Ajantha Mendis for the last match Sri Lanka played. Mendis hasn't been the same since his outstanding debut series against India last summer, but mere thoughts of his mesmeric bowling then will put him in the reckoning. The allrounder Mathews is back in the side and will slot in at No. 6.
The last time India played a Test in Ahmedabad, they were bowled out for 77 on the opening morning on a green top that came under widespread criticism, not least from then captain Anil Kumble. This time, however, the track looks rather flat and neither side need worry about the ball zipping around like its Headingley. MS Dhoni termed it "a bit sticky in the sense that last evening they had watered it" but was certain it would dry up and be "perfect" track to bat on initially. The weather on the eve of the Test was sweltering.
Watch South Africa vs England 2nd Twenty20 Live Streaming online updates. England were short on boundaries. Eoin Morgan gave another display of his huge talent and Paul Collingwood showed there is plenty of life in the old(ish) dog yet. The tourists' new-found freedom in limited-overs cricket is certainly the way forward. There will be days when it fails spectacularly, but as they learn how to adapt their aggression to conditions it will serve them well.
So South Africa are left needing to win the second Twenty20 to square the series and finish the first phase of this long head-to-head on even terms. They will want to sharpen their bowling skills after they tended to feed Morgan's leg-side strength, but Centurion should offer more high-scoring conditions. The main concern for England is the number of niggles the players are already picking up with James Anderson and Graeme Swann missing training along with Collingwood.
Watch Pakistan vs New Zealand 2nd T20 Live Streaming score updates. New Zealand's stand-in captain, is not looking too much into defeat to Pakistan in the first Twenty20. The winners will say Twenty20 allows them to build momentum, while the losers will quickly brush off the significance of the matches ahead of the one-day series next week. However, there is still a sense, outside of the World Twenty20, that internationally this format is still the third priority.
England's preparations were going well until their defeat against South Africa A when the batting subsided for 89 all out, while injuries haven't helped the planning. Paul Collingwood takes the reins for the Twenty20s before Andrew Strauss returns for the one-dayers which also creates a slightly disjointed feeling about the tourists' line-up

Pakistan conceded the ODI series in typically erratic fashion, making a meal of a chase of 212 before a phenomenal fightback staged by Mohammad Aamer and Saeed Ajmal ensured the game was settled in the final over. Watch India vs Australia 7th Odi Live Streaming and highlights which is from the mumbai stadium. DY Patil Stadium. The dazzling century at Hyderabad aside, he has contributed just 100 in five innings. This, though, is a special game, the first time he'll be playing in front of his home crowd since the terror attacks in Mumbai a year ago. Some of his greatest innings against Australia have come in Mumbai (twin fifties in the Test in 2001, and 90 in the World Cup of 1996), but they never resulted in Indian wins. He'll be desperate to change that.
India have to make a choice. Do they opt to give the fringe players a chance, or do they focus on the victory that would claw back some pride? Had the series been won rather than lost, Sudeep Tyagi and Amit Mishra would certainly have been given outings. Mishra could yet play in place of Ravindra Jadeja, but Virat Kohli is unlikely to get a game, given how the frontline batsmen have struggled at times. Ishant Sharma could make a return with the Test series against Sri Lanka now just four days away.
Watch New Zealand vs Pakistan 3rd Odi Live Streaming. In coming back to level the series, New Zealand were magnificent. Like Australia here earlier in the year, their batsmen took some time, but eventually adjusted to the conditions; in Brendon McCullum's case, he adjusted to a lot more than just conditions and all of New Zealand will hope that it might be the start of something special. He got good support from his colleagues, none more than Martin Guptill. The lower order, as long as Daniel Vettori is leading it, does not crumble readily.
The bowling is actually in better shape than many could have expected. Scott Styris' magic hand - if ever wickets were conjured from nothing, it was in that spell in the second ODI - was a bonus but Shane Bond, Kyle Mills, Tim Southee and Vettori himself have threatened. The fielding - outstanding in the win - is a bowling option in itself.
As ever in Pakistan, one loss has sent people into a tizzy. Ex-players, dormant in victory, become hyenas in defeat. Agendas are pushed, fingers pointed, conspiracies peddled. On paper, in the cold light of day, the problem is simple: the middle order clicked one game, their top order the other and what they wouldn't give to make them work together at the same time.
India vs Australia 6th Odi Live Streaming Online free. Ricky Ponting was especially pleased with McKay's efforts towards the end of the match, when India appeared to be well on top. McKay finished with a better economy rate than the two leaders of the pace attack, Ben Hilfenhaus and Doug Bollinger, and was a key in getting Australia back into the match.
"He was very good, he was calm under pressure," Ponting said. "We had to experiment late in the innings, with lots of different slower balls and things to try and take some wickets. Full credit to Clint, he executed things really well, a really good debut on that sort of wickets, I think he ended up with 3 for 50-odd off his ten, and that's as good as anyone."
As it turned out, McKay had good reason to smile. He could well have jumped a couple of places in Australia's list of fast bowlers but he knows that it will be tough to force his way into the side during Australia's home summer.
The ICC World Twenty20 apart, Pakistan have not been good at winning series or tournaments in recent years. They haven't won a Test series in three years and an ODI series for a year. Their win at the Sheikh Zayed stadium on Tuesday has, however, given them an ideal opportunity to change that statistic on Friday.
They are in good shape to do it as well; most of their bowlers looked sharp and took wickets, the fielding wasn't a mess either, the lower middle order was in the runs and Shahid Afridi is in irrepressible mood. The only real issue was Salman Butt's less than convincing return, though in fairness, Pakistan's lack of opening strength has been an issue for so long, it has become a non-issue. Younis Khan's duck will be a graver concern, as it represents a longer pattern of ODI indifference this year. If they win the series another low score might not hurt so much, but it will be gnawing away at him.
Though they were thumped, New Zealand have little reason to be disheartened. They know they were in the game for quite some time only really giving it away in the last 15 overs of their bowling. Kyle Mills and James Franklin are a handy pair to welcome back from injury; if Shane Bond's schizophrenic outing - his second spell was as poor as the first was magnificent - was just a one-off, then there exists a more than workable pace attack.
Live Score:
Australia's selectors are yet to decide on a replacement player and the depth of the nation's bowling stocks has already been tested during the tour. Brett Lee and James Hopes have flown home from India mid-series and the squad was already without Nathan Bracken, who has a knee injury.
Clint McKay and Moises Henriques have joined the squad to boost the attack and the selectors will need to scour the state ranks for a third fast man to add to the group. Their options will include Dirk Nannes and Brett Geeves, both of whom have been part of the squad over the past year.
Peter's injury does not appear to be a serious problem but it is unlikely he will be able to safely bowl within the next week which would therefore not allow him to have any further participation in the tour," Sims said. "With this in mind we have made the decision that Peter will return to Australia where he will reviewed by Cricket Australia medical staff to ensure he is available for selection at the beginning of the Australian summer
Watch India vs Australia 4th Odi Live Streaming Online Video for free. Boundaries wouldn't come for another four overs, but even without the big hits Hussey played an innings completely in sync with his character. He dabbed, he nudged, he swept, he reverse-swept (once), and all along he maintained a strike-rate in the 90s. He crossed the rope only three times, the first one was a misfield, and the last two came in the last three overs. Yet he scored 81 off 82. Hostile spells from Peter Siddle and Mitchell Johnson gave Australia a glimpse, at 53 for 3 in their defence, but MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh took the game away.
It was a big improvement from Nagpur where they were clobbered, and Ponting was graceful in defeat. "I don't think we can blame ourselves too much, to tell you the truth," Ponting said. "India played very well, there is no doubt about that. They certainly batted a lot better than us, in probably slightly more difficult conditions. The wicket was probably slightly worse, but I think our spinners in particular got a bit negated by how wet the ball was."
Manou was at least expected to feature in the match today, but Umpire Sanjay Hazare wasn't. He is not even on the ICC panel of umpires, and the BCCI had anointed him third umpire for the game yesterday. He was given that responsibility only because the foreign umpire, Mark Benson, has been ruled out due to illness, and the third umpire, Shavir Tarapaore, was promoted to on-field duty. At the last minute, though, Hazare and Tarapore exchanged roles.
Watch India vs Australia 3rd Odi Live Streaming Highlights. MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina took 108 in the last 10 overs in Nagpur - Australia's worst showing since 1999 - and the 82 conceded in the last eight overs in the previous match in Vadodara was their sixth-worst.
The absence of Brett Lee (who didn't bowl his quota in Vadodara and was injured in Nagpur) and Nathan Bracken is telling. More incriminating than the figures is the manner in which the runs have come. Fulltosses, leg-side wides, half-volleys, length deliveries, and misfields have all made the job easier for India.
Ricky Ponting was honest in assessing the problems he faces. "Since [Glenn] McGrath has moved on, we have mixed and matched with a lot of different guys over the last few years," he said after Wednesday's defeat. "The last ten overs - 108 off the last ten - is too many to give away. When you have batsmen at the crease who can strike the ball as well as the Indians can, you only have to be a few centimetres or a few inches off your execution, and you are going to go."

While the timing upset Ricky Ponting, Hauritz stood up and allowed only 11 runs from his first five overs, stifling India's chase of Australia's 8 for 292. He finished with 1 for 34 off nine as the hosts were restricted despite a late burst from Harbhajan Singh and Praveen Kumar. It ended a huge weekend that bolstered the domestic players' pockets and gave Australia an early edge in the seven-game series.
"It was pretty tough," Hauritz told AAP. "We didn't get out of the change room until 1am that morning [after the final], flew out at midday and got in at 8.30 the night before the game. Australia too have a few questions to answer: Will they give Shaun Marsh, who has had a successful stint in the IPL, an opportunity to open in the first ODI, or will they stick with Tim Paine who did a good job with Shane Watson against England? They might go with Paine at the top and push Marsh down. The middle order will miss the injured injured Michael Clarke, but Clarke has struggled in limited-overs cricket recently: his strike-rate in the 50-over format since the start of 2008 stands at a modest 66.81. However, his skills against spin bowling will be missed. India vs Australia Live Streaming
India will start the first ODI with a bit more hope than they did in the Champions Trophy: Virender Sehwag is back, and immediately the batting line-up looks much more potent. However, Yuvraj Singh is likely to sit out the first ODI due to a finger injury. With Rahul Dravid out, MS Dhoni can easily settle into the Dravid avatar that he has been doing so successfully in recent times: he doesn't hit out as violently as in his early days, and promotes himself when there is a good start so he can anchor the innings and allow the big hitters to express themselves. Expect the Australians to test out Suresh Raina with bouncers; among all the Indian batsmen in the fray, this series will be the biggest for Raina.
However, India will be a little uneasy about their bowling line-up. Munaf Patel should get a game, and it will be interesting to see whether Ishant Sharma, who has been struggling for quite a while now in limited-overs games, is included in the XI.

The Cobras started the Champions League with a win but that result against Bangalore was due largely to JP Duminy's lone hand. However, they steadily improved and have started to fire as a unit. The fixture against Delhi will serve as match practice ahead of the semi-final, and it is also an opportunity for Herschelle Gibbs to bat himself into form.
Delhi are already out of the competition and will be playing for a consolation win in their final game of a disappointing tournament for IPL teams. They have severely missed the services of their injured foreign stars, Daniel Vettori and AB de Viilliers, on the slow and low tracks of the Kotla and are desperate for one last hurrah.
Watch Eagles vs Trinidad & Tobago Live Streaming: With four points and a solid net run-rate (+1.438) they have one foot in the semi-finals; only an embarrassing big defeat to Eagles couple with a New South Wales win over Somerset can jeopardise their chances. Their trio of spinners have proved hard to handle, allrounder Dwayne Bravo is the tournament's leading wicket-taker, captain Daren Ganga is winning plaudits for his inspired leadership and their young aggressive batsmen have piled on the runs - not much to complain about for T&T so far.

Watch New South Wales vs Somerset Live Streaming: Somerset have depended on Trinidad & Tobago's enterprising style of play to get this far in the Champions League. They would have been eliminated if T&T had not beaten Deccan Chargers in the group stage, and they would have been knocked out had Kieron Pollard's haymaker not flattened New South Wales in the second round. At the moment ,Somerset only have an outside, and mathematical, chance of making the semi-finals and that will again hinge on T&T beating Eagles in the final match of League A.

Watch Cape Cobras vs Victoria Live Streaming Online Free. Victoria sit on top of League B with four points after their convincing win against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Thursday, their opening league-stage game. They will be up against South Africa's Cape Cobras, who racked up the tournament's highest score - 193 - in their previous encounter.
If the Cobras - now on two points - win tomorrow, they will knock Bangalore out of the tournament. If they lose, Victoria go straight through to the semi-finals and there is the possibility of a three-way tie for the second semi-final slot. The second match of the double-header, between Delhi Daredevils and Bangalore, and the final league game (Cobras v Delhi) will then assume added significance.
The ever impressive JP Duminy helped Cobras prevail over Bangalore in a tense chase in their opening group game and captain Andrew Puttick led by example against Otago, recording the tournament's first century. That was an all-round performance but Cobras will be up against much tougher opposition tomorrow and will be returning after a week's break, lengthy by this tournament's standards.

New South Wales look the strongest team of the tournament, on paper, and in their performances so far, they have lived up to that billing. They didn't have the best of conditions at the Feroz Shah Kotla, but their top order showed good application in both games. More importantly, they judged the pitch well and gauged what a good target was.

Bangalore have an advantage over Victoria in terms of international talent as well as home advantage, but Victoria probably won't mind playing at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. After playing on two slow and low tracks in Delhi where stroke-making was not easy, Victoria should find themselves more at home in Bangalore, where the hosts crossed 180 in both their matches and the lowest first-innings score in three matches was 150.

Andrew Symonds will be playing his first high-level cricket after being sent home just before the start of the World Twenty20 in June. A lethal hitter of the ball, an agile fielder, he can also bowl either spin or seam-up; his versatility is a major asset to Deccan, the reason why they splashed out US$1.35 million a year for his services.
Marcus Trescothick has been sweeping the end-of-season awards in England after a stunning year in which he piled on 2,934 runs across all competitions. This will be his first overseas assignment since pulling out of Somerset's pre-season to Dubai in 2008 due to the stress-related illness which forced him out of tours to India in 2005 and the Ashes in 2006-07.

Andrew Strauss is usually as affable as international captains come, but despite his upbeat sentiments, there was no disguising the exhausted despondency with which he addressed the media in Johannesburg on Wednesday, as England prepared to face the music in a one-day competition that has humiliation stamped all over it. True, they arrive in the country boasting a winning streak of one match, after denying Australia a 7-0 whitewash in the final ODI of the English summer on Sunday, but even in that irrelevant face-saver, they still shipped six wickets chasing 177.
And now, with respect to an Australian side that may be the reigning Champions Trophy champions but are still in an undeniable rebuilding phase, England prepare to face a team that really knows how to play one-day cricket. Sri Lanka simply hammered the much-fancied tournament hosts, South Africa, in the opening match on Tuesday. Tillakaratne Dilshan's majestic hundred put the match out of reach, as the wiles of Ajantha Mendis proved too canny to allow a 300-plus target to be pursued with any confidence - even for a team stacked with the sort of power-players that England can only dream of.
In the absence of Kevin Pietersen (who has scored two of England's three ODI hundreds since January 2008 - a tally that even Scotland has surpassed) and latterly Andrew Flintoff and even Luke Wright, England lack batsmen who can break the shackles, and raise the tempo. Strauss has been batting like a dream all summer, but even at his most imperious, he is still a man for whom an 80.00 strike-rate is a pacey tempo - hence his unfortunate habit during the Australia ODIs of getting out when well set, usually while attempting a reverse-sweep or similar, shots that his colleagues ought to have been producing while he continued to anchor the innings.
ICC Champions Trophy 2009 Live Streaming Online For FREE!!! Ishant averaged 31.48 and picked up 27 wickets in his first 20 ODIs. In 13 games in 2009, he has picked up 19 wickets at 31.42. The economy rate, though, has shot up from 5.34 to 6.19. On Sunday, in a ICC Champions Trophy warm-up game, he leaked 49 runs off seven overs and picked up a wicket.
There is a school of thought that Ishant should be given adequate breaks from ODIs to allow him to concentrate on Tests so that India don't risk losing a potent strike force in the longer version of the game. However, Srinath doesn't share that view.
Sri Lanka carried the energy from their powerful batting display into the field and Ajantha Mendis, unlike the home side's spinners, extracted bounce and turn under lights. Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis showed signs of dominance with an 81-run stand in quick time but once Smith was bowled off Mendis' first delivery, and Kallis and JP Duminy fell in successive balls, Sri Lanka could apply the chokehold.
Watch Live Streaming first match between South Africa vs Sri Lanka in the Champions Trophy 2009. South Africa takes on sri lanka in the first opener which is broadcast by star cricket.
we have potentially the best event organised by the ICC in a long while. Not entirely by design, though: there was no window for a longer tournament, there isn't even a reserve day for the final. So there was no space for flab or Super Sixes or Eights or whatever. Although Bangladesh can argue they had a better case than West Indies, few could have envisaged the political turmoil in the Caribbean when the tournament was being drawn up. As a result the preliminary groups are neither meaningless cakewalks nor so fickle that one freak loss ends the tournament for a team.
Throw in the fact that the top three teams are so close to each other, the No. 1 ranking is likely to change hands more often in this tournament than the baton in a relay race. So good on the ODIs, which do with this shot in the arm.
It helps that South Africa has been the setting for memorable starts to world events. In the first match of the 2003 World Cup, Brian Lara's century helped West Indies beat South Africa by three runs in a tense finish. Four years later the ICC went to South Africa unsure if the World Twenty20 would be accepted by the audience. The same two teams, in 37.4 overs, hit all such trepidations out of the Wanderers. The possibility of an exact repeat has been ruled out by the draw, which pits Sri Lanka opening the tournament against the hosts, but a similar start is needed.
Both players in the act on Tuesday run the risk of becoming perennial best men: both have been consistent limited-overs teams for large parts of last 15 years, but only two players in each team have tasted success in an ICC event: Sanath Jayasuriya and Muttiah Muralitharan won the 1996 World Cup, and Mark Boucher and Jacques Kallis won the inaugural Champions Trophy in 1998.
Since then South Africa have lost two World Cup semi-finals, one World Twenty20 semi-final, and three Champions Trophy semi-finals. Sri Lanka haven't been that consistent, but they too have lost a World Cup final and semi-final each, a World Twenty20 final, and shared a Champions Trophy final.
Not much has changed on that front: this is another best chance for South Africa to shrug off the chokers' tag, and although Sri Lanka are not starting off as favourites it would be folly to underestimate them. So let the nearly men kick the nearly tournament off.
While Kumar Sangakkara said a decision on Muttiah Muraliatharan's availability would be taken on Sunday evening, the bowler is fit and Sri Lanka should be fielding their strongest side - Thilan Samaraweera remains a doubt - and an Indian team missing the experience of three big-match players will have its work cut out to be competitive. Sri Lanka trounced India in the dress rehearsal on Saturday and again proved that once they have a score on the board at the Premadasa, they defend it resolutely.
Sri Lanka have all the weapons they need in two brisk new-ball operators, a vicious slinger, and two spinners with an assortment of tricks. Each of those bowlers is capable, more so under lights, of denying batsmen the space and time to score. The support cast is no less impressive, with the ever-improving Angelo Mathews and India would do well to be wary of Sanath Jayasuriya, who sorted out a couple of New Zealand batsmen with his variations last week. On Monday, India could face the world's most potent spin attack, with Murali and Ajantha Mendis possibly back in tandem.

Watch India vs New Zealand | IND vs NZ | Compaq Cup 2009 Live Streaming India's captain MS Dhoni was confident of the side's chances. He has reason to be.
This is India's third one-day series in Sri Lanka over the last 13 months. Where for decades India's record here had been nothing to crow over - they arrived for a tri-series in 2005 having won just nine of 33 matches - a strong one-day outfit has turned that record around dramatically. They have won seven of ten matches since then and in their last two series proved the past now counts for little, beating Sri Lanka 3-2 last August and 4-1 in February. In terms of rankings, there's plenty at stake for India in this series - if they go unbeaten into the final and win there, they will climb to No. 1 in the ICC's ODI rankings for the first time.
India strutted their stuff at the two practice sessions they had since arriving two days after the tournament began, and look confident. There were no traces of rust in how their batsmen and bowlers applied themselves. On the whole, the manner of their preparation has been calm and self-assured even though Virender Sehwag, a critical cog in the batting line-up, is missing. Plenty of responsibility will be on Rahul Dravid, recalled to the one-day team after two years. India's middle order has been shaky against fast, short-pitched bowling and if a wicket goes down early, expect Dravid to walk out first.
To beat a confident Indian outfit, New Zealand will have to shape up in disciplines that let them down in the first game. Their batting was rocked by a superb display from three bowlers of varying speeds and trajectories - Ian Bishop called it one of the best one-day efforts under lights he had seen - but the application was perhaps to blame. The top order seemed intent on attacking from the start. In the field, New Zealand failed to finish the job when Sri Lanka were 69 for 5 in 25.3 overs, and also gave them leeway with singles and doubles in the field. That was surprising given how efficient they were in the Twenty20s. A defeat tomorrow will see them crash out of the short tournament.
James Anderson admitted yesterday that the lack of intensity in this series compared to that of the Ashes had surprised him, but it doesn't help when the team is losing. And for that trend to be reversed, it seems inconceivable that Adil Rashid won't be drafted back into the side after his excellent all-round display in the first match at The Oval (31 from 23 and an economical spell with the ball). But it's with the bat that England need to shine, and they are again without the services of Stuart Broad (neck strain) and Joe Denly whose left knee was hacked in a football warm-up prior to the series. England's allrounder Broad may be unavailable but his Australian counterpart is, and is very much in form. Mitchell Johnson played a vital role in Australia's Lord's victory, transforming a dying innings with a blistering 43 from 23 balls before picking up 2 for 50. But it's the presence and sheer speed of Brett Lee that has provided Michael Clarke's side with that added spice. Frustrated at having to sit out of the Ashes, Lee's bursting with energy and he's not finished yet either, and even without Ricky Ponting to lead the side, Australia look the hungrier of the two teams. Watch Sri Lanka vs New Zealand Compaq Cup Live Streaming & Highlights
Sri Lanka, after consecutive Twenty20 defeats, and New Zealand, after a 50-over warm-up defeat to Sri Lanka A on Sunday, will attempt to kick-start the Compaq Cup on Tuesday, though the weather threatens to be a dampener. Scattered thunderstorms are predicted for each of the days this week and a short four-game tournament, already being criticised for its duration and practicality, needs to be competitive throughout to silence growing criticism of the 50-over game's future.
Sri Lanka, almost always formidable opponents on their own soil, do not start as favourites. New Zealand took plenty of confidence from two night wins at the Premadasa last week and they know their biggest shot at winning is getting into Sri Lanka's top order. New Zealand have repeatedly highlighted the importance of dismissing Tillakaratne Dilshan early to put pressure on Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, leaving a shaky lower order sweating.
One down, six to go. Australia took an early lead in the one-day series by holding off a spirited late charge form England's lower order to secure a four-run victory at The Oval. They almost let the match slip away in the closing overs, but Nathan Bracken held his nerve and Ryan Sidebottom will be the only one who can explain why he left the ball with three deliveries remaining and eight needed.
There is a real determination in the Australian side to treat this one-day series as a new chapter after the Ashes disappointment. It is an evolving unit as planning looks ahead to the 2011 World Cup and one of their newer faces, Callum Ferguson, produced a classy, unbeaten 71 to hold the innings together on Friday. Andrew Strauss admitted he hadn't seen much of him and England need to come up with some plans. Ferguson is already averaging over 50 in ODIs.
For England it was a familiar tale of frustration from the top-order as they all reached double figures without anyone passing Ravi Bopara's 49. There were a number of loose dismissals - Matt Prior top-edged a reverse sweep, Bopara fell to a lazy stumping and Owais Shah tread on his stumps - and too much was left to the lower order. However, England will take encouragement from Adil Rashid's performance. He followed an impressive bowling spell with 31 off 23 balls, to further enhance his growing reputation.

Watch out for…
Luke Wright has been up and down England's one-day batting line-up like a yo-yo but he has returned in a middle-order role to give the side impetus and striking power late in the innings. The early signs were promising as he gave the team a chance of chasing down 10-an-over for the final eight overs and launched the only six of the opening match when he drove Shane Watson handsomely over long off. If it hadn't been for his run-out off a no-ball England might have got over the line. Wright's bowling was limited to a single over in conditions which didn't suit his hit-the-deck style, but he needs to work on his accuracy to become a reliable option for Andrew Strauss.
Mitchell Johnson returns to the scene of his Ashes horror show. It was his first-innings display - 132 off 21 overs - in the second Test that went a long way towards costing Australia the match. He admitted to not really having a clue where it was going but, to his credit, recovered well form the ordeal despite still being short of his best. He was back at first change for the one-day series and started with three wickets at The Oval, including the key middle-order brace of Shah and Paul Collingwood, and is capable of winning a match of his own.

It was refreshing to see his face light up as he ran towards hat-trick hero Jacob Oram when New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by three runs. It has been a difficult tour for a side inexperienced in subcontinental conditions but the change in personnel for the Twenty20s seems to have infused life.
There is no ignoring the key role Vettori himself played, slowing his pace and teasing with his loop to take 2 for 11 in four overs in a Man-of-the-Match effort, but this was a victory fashioned by more than one or two individuals and that gave Vettori the most pleasure. The batting was shaky but the fielding exceptional, proving decisive in the outcome. A series win beckons, if New Zealand can keep their cool again.
England's captain, Andrew Strauss, feared the worst from the moment the injury occurred early on Thursday morning, and had already written Denly out of his match planning before official confirmation came through from the ECB. The timing and nature of the injury was especially embarrassing for the England camp, coming so soon after the abandonment of the second Twenty20 international at Old Trafford on Tuesday, which was called off because of fears for player safety.

After the loss of Ashes, Australia was hoping for a little revival of their honor by winning the T20 games at least, but rain god marred the first T20 match and it finally got abandoned with a nil-all result.
In the match Aussies were inching forward for a better edge as Brett Lee and Johnson opened against England with full fury. They were definitely looking on top when rain intervened the match.
Aussies were hoping to continue with their charged-up emotion in the forthcoming T20 match on September 01, 2009 at Manchester. Aussies will be captained by Michael Clarke and Paul Collingwood will lead England.
Australia will be looking forward to a decent total to defend and once again they will depend upon Cameron White for a good start. On the other side England will not rest on their laurels and is expected to charge back. However the team will definitely miss Andrew Flintoff whose knee injury will keep him out of the game for some time now.
First-up, however, there is a stop-over in Belfast that might, in days gone by, have represented a convivial way to unwind in a green and pleasant land renowned for its appreciation of a party. But not in this unstinting professional era. The Irish are the pace-setters of cricket's second tier - streets ahead of their traditional rivals, Scotland (who take on the Aussies in Edinburgh on Friday) and itching to put one over the English, for a variety of reasons that extend beyond mere sporting instincts. For starters, there is the likely presence in England's line-up of Eoin Morgan - a member of the Irish side that captured the imagination at the 2007 World Cup, but now a targeted man after switching his allegiance to further his career. And then there's the large Australian influence in the squad, all of whom are gunning for vengeance for their mother country, not least the former captain, Trent Johnston
Left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak has been ruled out of Bangladesh's upcoming tour of Zimbabwe beginning next week. Razzak, who strained his hamstring while batting in the third ODI against West Indies at St Kitts on Friday, will be returning home to continue with his recovery.
Enamul Haque jnr has been named as his replacement for the tour scheduled between August 9-18 and comprising a warm-up match and five ODIs.
Razzak, 27, was reported for a suspect action in November 2008 and he was suspended from bowling in international cricket. The ICC cleared him the following year and soon after, he was picked for the World Twenty20 in England. He was also Bangladesh's highest wicket-taker during their recent 3-0 ODI whitewash of West Indies, picking up seven at 22.85.

Since then time wasting and Andrew Flintoff's retirement have become the big issues, but the teams will not be focussing on the pre-match hype when the first ball is delivered.
They will be more intent on a brisk start and continuing their on-field battles in a contest that has already provided more heat than the St John's Wood tube station in summer. Australia enter the match disappointed they are not leading 1-0, while England are buoyant to be level. The visiting batsmen fired at Sophia Gardens, roaring to 674 for 6 before declaring, and their bowlers fell one wicket short of victory. The bowlers on both sides will be more excited by the conditions on offer in this game.
Nothing gets an Australian's neck prickling like the sight of Lord's and the players' baggy greens gain extra power whenever they bob through the Long Room. England's leaders can't understand why their team hasn't beaten their Ashes rivals in 75 years here. Another chapter will be added to the dusty pages of history this week.

The aggressive approach of England's tail knocked the stuffing out of Australia as 99 runs came in 16.5 overs during a momentum-seizing period of play. However, in a match that has already been characterised by numerous shifts in power, Katich and Ponting managed to ride out a fiery period after Hughes had been rattled by Flintoff's terrific opening burst.
When Australia finally ended England's merry stroke play they had half-an-hour to bat before lunch and Hughes was immediately into his stride with a succession of handsome off-side boundaries. There was a plan to target him with the short ball, but both James Anderson and Stuart Broad offered too much width and allowed Hughes to free his arms.
After the interval, though, the challenge went up a few levels as Flintoff was immediately thrown the ball for his first spell. He began with three rapid bouncers to Hughes from around the wicket, probing the middle-and-leg line that Steve Harmison utilised for England Lions, throwing in a few verbals for good measure, then beat the left-hander with one that cut away off the seam.
India went into the final over needing 11 and Dhoni hit the second ball from Jerome Taylor over midwicket to leave India on course for victory. "Someone like MS Dhoni can hit the ball out the ground at any time so it was comforting knowing that we had him at the crease controlling the game," said Kirsten. "He's had a magnificent series and he's played some really good one-day cricket for us. When it comes down to the wire it can go either way, the most important thing is that you have game breakers and match-winners in at that situation.

West Indies innings began two hours late and was interrupted thrice due to rain, and further intervals initially readjusted India's target to 195 in 27 overs before a further shower reduced it to 159 in 22 overs. In the end, thanks to MS Dhoni's unbeaten hand, India won in the final over with six wickets in hand.

Morton has opened in each of his 52 ODIs and boasts a decent record, averaging 35.19 with two centuries and ten fifties. However, he started off batting at No.3 in the domestic circuit, but said he found no difficulty in adapting to the role of an opener in international cricket. "Being a No. 3 throughout my career there was not much of an adjustment to move up to open the batting with the captain," Morton said. "It is all about dedication and application and backing myself to do the job. I aim to stay positive."
With the series level at 1-1, West Indies will be keen to take an unassailable lead in the third game at St. Lucia and Morton made his intentions clear. The series is level 1-1. As always I will be looking to win, he said. We will be looking to put in another good team effort as we showed in Jamaica. Players are putting their hands up and putting in good performances and we are confident
West Indies did well to get so close to a monstrous target but they could have done better and pulled off a stunning chase if one of their top-order batsmen played a long innings. Chris Gayle, Runako Morton, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul all made valuable contributions to keep West Indies in the game but got out just as they were beginning to dominate India. The pressure on the Indian bowlers, therefore, dissipated and left the lower-order batsmen with too much to do.
That West Indies were chasing a total of 340 was down to their bowlers indiscipline in line and length and their inability to fight back once the Indian batsmen raised the tempo. They will have to reduce the number of loose deliveries drastically to avoid another hiding on Sunday.
MS Dhoni did not appear to be a happy man as he shook hands with the West Indian batsmen after the game. The victory was largely due to Yuvraj Singh's brilliance, his 131 off 102 balls making up for the loss of early wickets and ensuring that a wayward bowling attack had enough to defend. The pressure on South Africa however, will be greater. They are expected to win this and anyway they will always have the whole 'chokers' tag to deal with until the day they actually lift a big trophy. It doesn't help that they look as good as they did during the 1999 World Cup, though they are easier on the eye. Pakistan, as Younis Khan said before leaving for England, won't much mind a semi-final spot.
Kamran Abbasi rightly noted that they may have had an easier ride to the semis than most but no country has had a rougher two years. Clearly they'd love to win it, but they have already achieved more than many thought and a loss wouldn't be the end of the world. But importantly, as the only side to make it to the last four in 2007 and 2009, they have underscored their significance in this brave new, T20 world, a world in which they absolutely cannot be ignored.

Equally, Sri Lanka must do a New Zealand on Ireland and give them a thumping, not just a timid slap of the wrists.
The World Champions of ODI format Australia will take on Caribbean in the third match of ICC World Twenty20 here at Kennington Oval.
Aussies are eying to create history after winning this year's T20 World Cup. If they clinch the title they will be Champions in all the formats.
On the other hand, Chris Gayle-led West Indies are rated underdog in this mega event but the former World Champs have the ability to beat any side in the world.
However, Australia received a jolt just before the starting of the tournament as its one of the important all-rounder Andrew Symonds was sent back home after found guilty of breaching team discipline.
Baggy Green have good combination of young and senior players. They have several devastating players like David Warner, Michael Clarke, Mike Hussey, Ricky Ponting and Brad Haddin. Aussies have also best bowling attack led by Brett Lee. Lee is ably supported by Mitchel Johnson and Nathan Breaken.
Apart from this, West Indies team is also looking very strong on the paper. They have Gayle as an experienced campaigner while Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarain Chanderpaul will support the team in the middle order.
Gayle had slammed first ton of inaugural Twenty20 World Cup against South Africa.

Pakistan somehow managed to reach the super 8 level by beating Netherlands in the previcous game. The on field activity does not seem to be satisfied by the pakistan team by missing lots of catches and missing the run out. The chance for winning this game would be difficult if they didn't perform well in the on-field.
Sri Lanka on the other hand plays extremely well with Sanath jayasurya is in form by making 81 runs knock in the last game. The Players are much confident with the captain Sangakara. The Strongest plan in the game is the spinners and they can take the game from the Pakistan easily.
