Six wins from seven starts ... a statistic that looked like an anomaly is starting to take on a life of its own, as England continue their improbable dominance of South Africa in 50-over cricket. At Centurion on Sunday, Paul Collingwood marked his national-record 171st appearance with a sublime allround performance, as England exacted satisfying vengeance for their humiliation in the previous week's second Twenty20.
Their seven-wicket victory showcased the unfamiliar vein of confidence that is running through the squad at present, and while Andrew Strauss has made caution a watchword throughout his impressive tenure as England captain, it's fair to suggest that they have got their opponents a little bit rattled at present.
Mickey Arthur, South Africa's coach, has not been short of a word or two in this series, but his attempts at psychological warfare have so far fallen on impassive ears. Jonathan Trott, the principal object of his ire, ignored the boo-boys and fronted up with a critical 87 to anchor England's run-chase at Centurion, and though Arthur's other target, Adil Rashid, has been rather subdued in his two appearances to date, he can hardly be regarded as a pivotal figure in England's plans just yet.

Simon Taufel gave Brendon McCullum lbw off the penultimate ball in Dunedin, Pakistan appeared to have separated New Zealand's last reliable batsmen and won the day. "The last decision going our way helped us immensely," Taylor said. "The partnership between Daniel [Vettori] and Brendon [McCullum] has probably put us back in the match. Being 200 for 6 at the end of the day's play would have favoured Pakistan, but 270 for 6, I think it's pretty even."
Taylor's fighting 94 propped up New Zealand after the loss of two early wickets before a mini-collapse, during which they lost three wickets for 19 runs. McCullum and Vettori then added 65 for the seventh wicket to help the hosts recover before the scare in the final over.
Earlier in the day Pakistan had also referred a close lbw shout against Taylor, which was ruled in the batsman's favour when he was on 54. After two reviews went New Zealand's way on the first day of the new system's implementation, Taylor was happy with it.
"I have seen it [the first referral] since I have been out, it was a little bit closer than I thought," he said. "When I first got hit I thought it was high and might have even hit outside the line. As it worked out, the umpire made the right decision and I suppose I am happy for that. With the referrals system, last year, we had a few that did not go in our favour and today we had a couple go our way, so it is good at the moment."

Watch New Zealand vs Pakistan 3rd Odi Live Streaming. In coming back to level the series, New Zealand were magnificent. Like Australia here earlier in the year, their batsmen took some time, but eventually adjusted to the conditions; in Brendon McCullum's case, he adjusted to a lot more than just conditions and all of New Zealand will hope that it might be the start of something special. He got good support from his colleagues, none more than Martin Guptill. The lower order, as long as Daniel Vettori is leading it, does not crumble readily.
The bowling is actually in better shape than many could have expected. Scott Styris' magic hand - if ever wickets were conjured from nothing, it was in that spell in the second ODI - was a bonus but Shane Bond, Kyle Mills, Tim Southee and Vettori himself have threatened. The fielding - outstanding in the win - is a bowling option in itself.
As ever in Pakistan, one loss has sent people into a tizzy. Ex-players, dormant in victory, become hyenas in defeat. Agendas are pushed, fingers pointed, conspiracies peddled. On paper, in the cold light of day, the problem is simple: the middle order clicked one game, their top order the other and what they wouldn't give to make them work together at the same time.

Kyle Mills and James Franklin are a handy pair to welcome back from injury; if Shane Bond's schizophrenic outing - his second spell was as poor as the first was magnificent - was just a one-off, then there exists a more than workable pace attack.
