Brendon McCullum's hip is the big worry for the visitors, even though it won't keep him out of the match. McCullum, who scored a century in Canberra on Thursday, was unable to take the gloves in that game, but Vettori is confident. "I'm not allowing him any other option," Vettori told NZPA. "We need him to keep to provide us with as many options as possible." Gareth Hopkins, the back-up gloveman, is on standby and New Zealand need a replacement for Jesse Ryder, who is out for a week with a shoulder problem. Kyle Mills will probably bat at No. 7 and Vettori has spoken of playing two spinners.

Shewag In The Battle :
India's 3-2 victory in August last year was their first-ever bilateral series win in Sri Lanka and their chances of making it two in a row will increase significantly if the result of Saturday's day-night contest goes their way. India gain a massive boost with the return of Virender Sehwag - who missed the first ODI due to a hip injury - and a win for them will leave the hosts needing three consecutive victories to prevent defeat; a Sri Lankan success will bring the series back on an even keel.

To beat a clinical Indian outfit, however, Sri Lanka will have to shape up in disciplines that let them down in the first one-dayer in Dambulla. Apart from their batsmen failing to build substantially on Sanath Jayasuriya's century, Sri Lanka also to gave India leeway with loose running between the wickets and sloppy catching, aspects that are usually second nature to them. Tillakaratne Dilshan dropped Suresh Raina early in India's chase, and his run-out earlier in the match was the first of two in the innings, and the seventh of eight in their last six ODIs.

India, on the other hand, did little wrong during their six-wicket victory. There were traces of rustiness in the field, and a couple of batsmen fell to forgettable dismissals, but on the whole, the execution of the chase was calm and efficient even though Sehwag, a critical cog in the batting line-up, was missing. Their handling of Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis - the duo that caused nightmares during the last Test series - was particularly effective: between them, Murali and Mendis took only 1 for 99 in 20 overs.

Parnell, 19, and Tsotsobe, who each played one of the Twenty20 internationals on this tour, will be especially keen to impress ahead of the return series in South Africa starting next month. Tsotsobe, 24, has had little to do but bowl in the nets for the past month and a half, having been part of the squad since the beginning of the Test series.

Ntini has taken Tsotsobe under his wing during the trip and he said he would be thrilled to see Tsotsobe make his debut at the WACA, where Ntini himself made his first ODI appearance 11 years ago. "I don't know which of the two of us is more excited," Ntini said.

"I have told 'Lopsy' [Tsotsobe] that this is the place where it all started for me. I still remember having Craig McMillan caught by Jonty Rhodes at point and then I got Stephen Fleming as well. I can't remember who my third wicket was. This is where he must make his mark. He must put down a big box and put all his eggs into it."

The youthful South Africa side will provide an extra confidence boost to Australia, who have regained Michael Clarke and Nathan Bracken for Friday's game. The Australians just managed to avoid losing their No. 1 Test ranking by taking the dead rubber in Sydney and Barnes said claiming the top ODI spot was not as important to South Africa as keeping Australia down.

"There's a bigger picture," Barnes said. "We don't want to give the Australians any breathing space. We've got them down 3-1 at the moment and we want to make sure that's 4-1. We want to give them absolutely nothing to bring to South Africa.courtsey : cricinfo.com

Preview Of the Match

It's going to be a tough, challenging series but we are looking forward to that challenge," Jayawardene said. "Things happened for us in Pakistan which is good. We should try and continue that trend.

"I put the success that we had in Pakistan [down] to the way we successfully adapted to the tough conditions in Zimbabwe and in Bangladesh," he added. "A lot of younger guys put their hands up and a lot of character was shown in our team. In different situations certain players played really well. That gave a lot of guys the confidence going forward.

"The way we lost the first game in Pakistan was really tough for us. We had a chat and we knew exactly what went wrong and the next two games was history. The way our boys played was brilliant. The last three months have taught us quite a few lessons and hopefully we'll learn from that and continue to improve as a unit."

While Sri Lanka have been on the road for the past three months, India have enjoyed successes at home, against Australia and England, and the luxury of a break in a cramped schedule thanks to the cancellation of the Pakistan tour - the absence of which has led to Sri Lanka playing both teams

Australia Vs South Africa Team news :

Australia's most effective ODI bowler Nathan Bracken has been ruled out of tomorrow's must win game with a calf strain and Ben Hilfenhaus comes back to take his place. Also leg spinning all rounder Cameron White takes Nathan Hauritz's place who is consigned to the 12th man duties after taking an unimpressive 2 for 60 off nine overs in Sydney.
Proteas will be without their star wicket keeper Mark Boucher after he was ruled out of the ODI series with a broken toe caused by a Shaun Tait yorker. AB de Villiers will don the gloves and it is a fight between Morne Morkel and Vaughn van Jaarsveld for the last spot in the team.
Pitch conditions
The picturesque Adelaide Oval has always been a batting paradise with it's short square boundaries, but of late this has changed with the bowlers holding sway with Sri Lanka's 8 for 274 being the highest score in the last three years. This also will be the first time these two teams have faced each other in a one-dayer at this ground. Excellent conditions for cricket has been predicted tomorrow and it should be a ripper of a game!

For Pakistan, it is unlikely Shoaib will play. Amid criticism from various quarters regarding his fitness and commitment, his place in the side appears tenuous. Fast bowler Sohail Khan, who's only played three ODI's, could be a replacement option.

Sri Lanka will look to retain a winning combination, and with Thilan Kandamby cementing his place for the decider with an impressive half-century, his inclusion at the expense of Mubarak was made at the right time.

When Mehrab fell in the 28th over, lobbing Price to midwicket, Bangladesh were well on course to win with the score on 94. The in-form Shakib Al Hasan forced the pace with a 22-ball 24 as both batsmen took on the seamers. Raqibul brought up his fifty with a clip off Mupariwa to deep midwicket, and though Shakib fell to Prosper Utseya with the team still 25 adrift of the target, Mushfiqur Rahim, dropping down the order, sealed the victory in style with a six.

The damage had earlier been inflicted by Nazmul, who continued the good work he'd started against the Sri Lankans in the recently-concluded tri-series. He ended a patient opening stand in the tenth over by getting rid of Hamilton Masakadza, who tried to break free but spliced a simple catch to mid-off.

Vusi Sibanda, returning to the side, forced three boundaries to the on side off Nazmul but was trapped leg before off the same bowler while trying to nudge it fine. Tatenda Taibu, battling indifferent form on this tour, failed to make amends, as a flick off Rubel was taken brilliantly by Mehrab at midwicket. It got progressively worse for the visitors after they lost three more wickets for the addition of two runs - Stuart Matsikenyeri was run out, Elton Chigumbura was bowled off an inside edge off Nazmul while Rubel beat Malcolm Waller for pace.

Zimbabwe had lost six with less than 50 on the board and were desperate for a recovery. It came, though the pace of cricket was anything but exciting. The spinners rushed through their overs and for Utseya, defense was the best form of attack - he consumed 50 balls to get to 5.

The boundary drought lasted close to 22 overs and the spell was broken in the 39th over when the batsmen opted for the third Powerplay. Williams slashed two fours through the off side before launching the offspin of Mahmudullah and Naeem Islam for sixes over midwicket. He reached his fifty off 81 balls and fell soon after for 59, run out by Mortaza. That stand produced 96 but their stubborn resistance wasn't enough in the end. Bangladesh's comeback has brought the series alive ahead of the deciding one-dayer on Friday.

Australia have three ODIs remaining against South Africa, with the series currently level at 1-1, followed by five more against New Zealand. They will play three Tests and five ODIs in South Africa before the proposed ODI series against Pakistan, and then head to England for the World Twenty20 followed by the Ashes.

The postponed Champions Trophy and Tests against Pakistan are due later in the year followed by another full home season in Australia. The team's resources have been stretched this season, especially in the bowling department, which has lost the services of Brett Lee and Stuart Clark for significant periods while allrounders Andrew Symonds and Shane Watson are also on the sidelines.

The team management is conscious of player workload and rested Mitchell Johnson for recent one-day games, while Brad Haddin missed the Twenty20 internationals against South Africa. However, Ponting believes that part of Australia's run with injuries is just plain bad luck.

"Does it just come down to workload?" Ponting said. "I think we pay so much attention to workload ... that sometimes it is just the run that you have. But that is why this next phase is so important for us because we can't afford to be going into the Ashes with eight Cricket Australia [contracted] players out injured."

As well as all the international cricket there is also the IPL to fit in along the way, but Ponting said the main concern should be over Australia's matches. Ponting is one of a number of Australians who have IPL deals, including the recently-capped David Warner, but at the moment it isn't at the forefront of his mind.

After much negotiation and tweaking of provisional itineraries, Sri Lanka will now arrive in Pakistan on January 18 to play three day-night ODIs, leave and then come back on February 14th to play two Tests.

"The ODIs will be played on January 21, 24 and 27 at Karachi, Lahore and Faisalabad respectively," Salim Altaf, chief operating officer PCB, told Cricinfo.

"They will then come back on February 14 to play two Tests in Karachi and Lahore. Those dates will be announced soon," he said.

The gap in between allows Sri Lanka to ink in a series against India, something their sports minister Gamini Lokuge said was "60% certain" recently. Though BCCI officials have confirmed that contact has been made unofficially with Sri Lanka for a possible ODI series in between, they maintain they will consider a series against Sri Lanka

Not that the generosity of spirit is likely to infect Sri Lanka, for they don't arrive as the obliging tourists. They are a hardy bunch, well-balanced between young and old, and have a fair sprinkling of game-changing superstars. Pakistan closely followed the "grey areas" in sketchy recent ODI performances in Bangladesh, but they wouldn't have failed to notice that they still managed to win. Just in case they did, Jayawardene was on hand to remind them.

"We're still winning," he said. "There are periods when you go through tough times as a team and you need to pull through them. That's what character is all about. I haven't seen too many teams being 6 for 5 [as Sri Lanka were in the tri-series final against Bangladesh] and still winning. Even when we came here for the Asia Cup, we weren't favourites and we won it."

The 22-year-old opener David Warner is back after leaving the team briefly when Michael Clarke was passed fit prematurely from a nagging thumb injury. Warner, who has played two Twenty20s and no first-class matches, will open with Shaun Marsh, allowing Michael Hussey to head back to the middle order. The offspinner Nathan Hauritz has travelled the country with the team over the past week without playing, but is likely to get an opportunity at Bellerive Oval, where Tasmania have used three spinners at times this season. James Hopes, who had 0 for 51 off 10 overs in Melbourne, looks like the vulnerable one.

Australia (probable) 1 Shaun Marsh, 2 David Warner, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 David Hussey, 6 Cameron White, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Nathan Hauritz, 9 Nathan Bracken, 10 Ben Hilfenhaus, 11 Shaun Tait.

Dale Steyn seemed to have some problems with a shoulder while fielding in Melbourne and the South Africans are intent on rotating their bowlers, so it won't take much for Steyn to go and Makhaya Ntini to come in. AB de Villiers is still waiting to return from his bruised hip and if he is cleared Vaughn van Jaarsveld - he dropped two catches, took one and was run out for 4 on debut - could make way. Neil McKenzie, who played his first ODI for five years, would normally be squeezed out, but he showed some form with a valuable 63.

South Africa (probable) 1 Herschelle Gibbs, 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 AB de Villiers, 5 JP Duminy, 6 Neil McKenzie, 7 Mark Boucher (wk), 8 Albie Morkel, 9 Morne Morkel, 10 Johan Botha (capt), 11 Makhaya Ntini.

Some Interesting news about the match

The tri-series warmed up on Saturday with Zimbabwe edging out the hosts Bangladesh by 38 runs, a professional performance which would have given even the big shots a run for their money. One such team which nearly suffered an upset or two against the Zimbabweans in recent times is Sri Lanka. The five-match series in Zimbabwe in November threatened to end as one of the most dubiously one-sided contests after the first two games but the hosts showed the character to bounce back and make the opposition huff and puff for their remaining victories.
The most worrisome aspect for Sri Lanka was the batting and the form of their captain Mahela Jayawardene who scored just 19 from four games. They scraped through in their chase of 147 in the fourth ODI and survived another scare in the fifth after defending a paltry 152. The batsmen were tested in conditions which didn't suit them but they still can't afford to relax in the friendlier conditions in Mirpur. Elton Chigumbura and Shakib Al Hasan displayed good technique on a turning track and had to graft it out after wickets had fallen.
If Zimbabwe upset the Sri Lankans tomorrow, the final league game between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will be a virtual semi-final.

Some Interesting news about the Match

Team news

Australia have rested Brad Haddin due to his heavy workload in the past month and Luke Ronchi will take up the position behind the stumps. Ronchi was excellent with both bat and gloves in the West Indies this year but his domestic batting form has been down this summer and a lower-order position is likely. Michael Clarke and Mitchell Johnson have also been given time off. Australia's major decision was over which bowlers to include. They are keen to get some overs into Shaun Tait, while squad members Ryan Harris and Nathan Hauritz will have to wait until Tuesday at the Gabba for potential Twenty20 international debuts.

Australia 1 Shaun Marsh, 2 David Warner, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 David Hussey, 6 Cameron White, 7 James Hopes, 8 Luke Ronchi (wk), 9 Nathan Bracken, 10 Ben Hilfenhaus, 11 Shaun Tait.

South Africa have named their starting line-up and there is no Hashim Amla, Neil McKenzie or Morne Morkel. Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Vaughn van Jaarsveld are set to make their international debuts, while all eyes will also be on Herschelle Gibbs in his return to the national side.

South Africa 1 Herschelle Gibbs, 2 Jacques Kallis, 3 AB de Villiers, 4 JP Duminy, 5 Vaughn van Jaarsveld, 6 Mark Boucher (wk), 7 Albie Morkel, 8 Johan Botha (capt), 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Makhaya Ntini, 11 Lonwabo Tsostobe.

Watch out for ...

David Warner was the bolter in Australia's squad. At 22 and having not yet made his first-class debut, Warner was picked on the strength of a couple of brilliant limited-overs performances for New South Wales. He made a state record unbeaten 165 in from 112 balls against Tasmania and followed it a week later with 97 from 54 balls - narrowly missing the fastest one-day hundred in Australian domestic history - against the same opponents in Hobart. He will be especially fascinating to watch if he uses the double-sided bat he has trialled this season; it allows him to play the reverse-sweep without changing his grip.

Herschelle Gibbs turns 35 next month but South Africa view him as an important part of their campaign for the 2011 World Cup. Those plans were derailed slightly in November when Gibbs was demoted from the national setup after breaking a team curfew. A month-long alcohol rehabilitation programme was the result and this will be Gibbs' first appearance since the incident. The coach Mickey Arthur has told Gibbs he expects him to lead from the front as the senior man in the top order; it will be interesting to see how he responds.

Pitch & conditions

The MCG's drop-in pitches have not been easy to score on in recent years. The surfaces are often two-paced and in limited-overs formats bowlers have had more reason to cheer than usual.

Stats and trivia

The teams have met in two Twenty20 internationals for one win each.
The MCG has hosted only one Twenty20 international and the 74 made by India last year was the lowest innings total ever recorded by a Test-playing nation in the format.

The decision has opened the door for Ronchi, who impressed with his batting and his excellent glovework in the Twenty20 and ODIs in the West Indies this year when Haddin flew home with a broken finger. However, Ronchi fell into a batting slump with Western Australia this season - he has made only one half-century in any format - and he said it was reassuring to be confirmed as the No. 2 gloveman in the country.

"You think about it sometimes," Ronchi said on Saturday. "Obviously after the West Indies I thought about it a bit and sometimes not performing the way you want to and you doubt yourself. For this to come up is a nice reassuring feeling and puts my mind in a good place."

Haddin is expected to return for the one-day internationals, which begin at the MCG on Friday. For now, he will enjoy a rare few days at home in Sydney with his wife and baby son Zac.

"I talked to him about it a little bit, see how he was going," Ronchi said. "I think more than anything he was quite tired and sore from the Test series. So I don't think he was overly disappointed not playing because he knew he'd have a little bit of a break and then he'd be into the ODIs.

"I don't think he's too worried about it. He obviously knows that he's number one. I'm his backup at the moment and whenever he's raring to go I'll get flicked, time to go home again."

Haddin, who became Australia's keeper following Adam Gilchrist's retirement last year, struggled with niggles during the tours of the Caribbean and India. Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, said Haddin would benefit from a short break.

"Brad arrived in Melbourne yesterday feeling the effects of his heavy workload over the past three months," Hilditch said on Saturday. "In accordance with our policy of managing the workloads of players involved in all three forms of the game, it was decided that he would benefit from not playing in the two Twenty20 internationals.

"Despite being initially selected in the squad, we wanted to assess Brad once he had arrived in Melbourne. It is the same process we employ for all players in that we assess them after they have had a chance to rest and recover immediately following a match, especially if they have been involved in a lot of cricket as Brad has been

News : New Zealand batsman Jesse Ryder will miss the fourth one-day international against West Indies in Wellington on Saturday because of "inadequate preparation". Ryder missed a team meeting on Thursday morning and was unable to train in the afternoon after a late night of drinking.
Ryder was fined after a disciplinary hearing for missing both the meeting and training. New Zealand have called up Mathew Sinclair as a replacement and he will bat at No 3.
"We are all disappointed that this has happened. Since February last year, we have witnessed encouraging signs from Jesse both on and off the park," Justin Vaughan, chief executive of New Zealand Cricket, said. "These vast improvements meant Jesse was recently given more latitude in his personal decision making. In hindsight, this was premature. However while it is a drinking-related issue, it does not compare with last February in its severity."
In February, Ryder had put his hand through a window while trying to gain access to a toilet area that had been accidentally locked. The injury occurred in Christchurch the morning after New Zealand's ODI series win against England and it later emerged that he was also out drinking until 1.30am on the eve of a game. He had to undergo surgery and was sidelined until September.

Jesse Ryder, the New Zealand batsman, said the team's top five 'has got to fire' in the remaining three ODIs against West Indies. The home side, who drew the Tests and Twenty20 series, trail 1-0 after their defeat in Christchurch.

"If one in the top five gets in and scores some runs and the rest bat around them it would be good," Ryder said. "A few of us got starts [in Christchurch] but we just didn't kick on."

Coach Andy Moles had given his team the same message after the loss, and asked the batsmen to follow Ramnaresh Sarwan's example - he took charge of the chase of 158 in 28 overs with an unbeaten 67, while the best for New Zealand was Ryder's 32.

"My message to the top five was they needed to take more responsibility," Moles said. "The opposition had one player bat all the way through and it showed if you've got someone you can bat around you can set targets and chase targets."

With Jacob Oram suffering from an injury niggle and unlikely to bowl even if picked in the XI, Ryder could also be in line for bowling duties in Wellington. While seven of New Zealand's squad were sent away for domestic games, Ryder was seen sending down his medium-pacers at the Basin Reserve under the supervision of New Zealand bowling coach Vaughn Johnson scorecard

Australia have received a new look with Andrew McDonald and Doug Bollinger all set to make their debuts. The toss-up for one fast-bowling spot was between Bollinger and Ben Hilfenhaus, and by picking the local man the selectors have ensured two left-arm fast bowlers in the XI. Peter Siddle, who was so impressive in Melbourne, will take the new ball with Bollinger, and Mitchell Johnson will come in at first change.

Lee's stress injury in his left foot and ankle surgery mean he will miss up to 10 weeks while Symonds' knee operation on Wednesday should leave him free to take some part in Australia's one-day campaigns. This is the players' last opportunity to impress for the return series in South Africa in February.

Australia 1 Matthew Hayden, 2 Simon Katich, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 Michael Clarke, 6 Andrew McDonald, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Nathan Hauritz, 10 Peter Siddle, 11 Doug Bollinger.

While Australia have lots to consider, South Africa have few worries in their camp. If Ashwell Prince's cracked thumb heals they will have some restructuring to do, with JP Duminy a certainty to hold his spot after his outstanding displays in Perth and Melbourne, and Neil McKenzie expected to make way. Graeme Smith's elbow might also be a problem, but the captain is desperate to play in the aim for a cleansweep.

South Africa (probable) 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Neil McKenzie, 3 Hashim Amla, 4 Jacques Kallis, 5 AB de Villiers, 6 JP Duminy, 7 Mark Boucher (wk), 8 Morne Morkel, 9 Paul Harris, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Makhaya Ntini.

Pitch and conditions

Paul Harris has out-bowled both Nathan Hauritz and Jason Krejza during the first two Tests and he will gain more assistance on a Sydney pitch that favours the slow bowlers. However, the curator Tom Parker says it won't be a raging turner, and the spinners might have to wait until the third or fourth day for significant help. Fast bowling will again be the major weapon of both sides, who will pick only one specialist slow man, and they will operate on a surface that is slightly green.

New Zealand coach Andy Moles says he was pleased with the performance of his bowlers in the first ODI against West Indies in Queenstown. Though the match was washed out, New Zealand restricted West Indies to 129 for 5 in the 35.4 overs possible.
No bowler conceded more than 4.42 run an over and Jacob Oram was the most economical with 16 off his six overs. Moles said it was good to see Oram, who missed the Test series because of a calf strain, bowl without any discomfort. "With Jake [Oram] and Dan [Vettori] bowling together they managed to build up pressure really well," Moles was quoted as saying on NZPA. "Any good one-day side knows you need combinations of bowlers and those two bowl well together."
Moles also praised Kyle Mills, who dismissed the attacking Chris Gayle in his seven-over spell for 23 runs. "He [Mills] showed what an experienced bowler he is by taking the pace off the ball."
